“1 Step Back – 2 Steps Forward”

As we begin our second season of YOTA Masters, I want to make sure we are 100% in the technique department. I have always thought (as a group) we have had fairly good Freestyle technique.

Week 1 back (Sept. 7th – 10) our main focus/goal is Freestyle and Kicking. While we may not be doing too many high yardage sets, we will be working consistently on freestyle pull and freestyle kicking techniques.

For those of us at the workouts we will begin to hear the phrase, “perpendicular swimming”… It is a growing theme in USA Swimming (and US Masters alike) to have a high elbow not only out of the water, but more importantly as we begin our catch/and pull of the water. While we may not immediately (or ever) achieve a full 90 degree angle in our initial freestyle catch, we want to make it a goal to get as close to it as possible!

This week (and always), I encourage us to take one step back and two steps forward. I want us to slow things down, fix any flaws in our technique and then proceed to rebuild the “feeling” of the water with our “new” techniques.
